Trip to Palagruža

Palagruža is a small, remote island in the middle of the Adriatic Sea.

It consists of one main island, called Vela Palagruža, and a smaller one, Mala Palagruža, and there are twenty or so other closely-associated rocks or reefs. All the main islets are in the form of steep ridges.

The archipelago is the southernmost point of the  Croatia and its most inaccessible part. It can be reached only by chartered motor-boat, requiring a journey of two to three hours from the island of Korčula or Lastovo.

Lighthouse is located on Vela Palagruža, about 90 metres above sea-level.

The island is uninhabited, except by the lighthouse crew and by summer tourists.

There are two well-kept trails on Palagruža. One of them leads to Stara Vlaka, a pebble bay on the northern side of the island, while the other trail leads to the southern side of Velika Palagruža to Veli Zal so-called "Južno zlato", one of the most beautiful beaches on the Adriatic. These pebble beaches are ideal for small children due to shallow waters and fine pebbles.

Palagruža has a climate unusual for Croatia due to its maritime location. It is not a Mediterranean climate, it is more subtropical on account of its warm winter temperatures and its hot summers. The climate and vegetation resemble those of the south of Crete, Gibraltar and even parts of North Africa.

The island is a nature reserve with numerous endemic species of flora and fauna.

For some, Palagruža is associated with the Homeric hero Diomedes, king of Argos, who is thought to be buried here.

Also, according to church records, Pope Alexander III was on Palagruža on Ash Wednesday, March 9th, 1177. While traveling with his fleet of ten galleys, he was impressed with the archipelago's beauty and decided to make a stop. He was served dinner on a small plateau on the island of Palagruža Mala, that is now being called "Papina njiva" (Pope's Field). After his stay on Palagruža, the fleet headed for the island of Vis, then towards Zadar and finally Venice.
